Tears or Cheers: Welcome to the Annual Emotional Rollercoaster AKA First Day of School
The first day of school is around the corner bringing a frenzy of activity. Parents shop with their kids to pick out school supplies and a ‘First Day Back’ outfit. Classrooms are scrubbed and prepped. Teachers review their lesson plans for the coming year. Parents, teachers, and kids exhibit a varying array of emotions: Cheers, tears, and everything in between.
School provides structure and routine in the lives of children and parents. Each day has a start and a finish. School days are broken into segments and periods: First bell, Announcements, English, History, Science, Math, Lunch, etc. Assignments are mapped out. Homework given. Summer schedules are dictated by flexible and floating agendas. With kids back in school, parents look forward to the promise of containment and breathe a sigh of relief knowing the kids are covered from 8am to 4pm.
On the flip side, the beginning of each new school year carries a tinge of bittersweetness.. Summer is a magical time for kids, full of adventure and new experiences. Each school year is a rite of passage, a measurable quantity of time as we move from childhood into adulthood: First day of elementary, first day of middle school, first day of high school, first car, first job, first boyfriend/girlfriend. Many of life’s ‘firsts’ occur while we are in school. ‘Back to School’ is code for "What changes will materialize in the next nine months?”
